Getting to the Resort

From the Kahului Airport, Maui, the drive to Napili Point Resort is about 35 miles and takes about an hour, depending on traffic. Follow the signs to Lahaina when leaving town and you should do fine.

The route takes you on a scenic drive through sugar cane fields, past pineapple fields, along several miles of undeveloped coastline and into the most popular destination area on the island of Maui, the stretch of beaches and activities extending north from old Lahaina Town to the Napili district.

From Kahului Airport, the main airport road leads west from the terminal area and connects to State Route 380. Continue for about seven miles across the isthmus which gives Maui its other name, 'The Valley Isle', until you reach State Route 30.

Turn left onto State Route 30 and continue following it until you are less than a mile from Napili Point Resort. The route will take you to the west side of the island past the turnoff for Kihei and Wailea, past the marina at Maalaea and along the coastline and through the old whaling port of Lahaina.

From Lahaina, Napili Point Resort is about 10 more miles north, still via State Route 30. Between Lahaina and Napili you will pass the golf courses and high-rise hotels at Kaanapali, then you will pass the West Maui commuter airport and the Kahana district.

As you approach the Napili district on State Route 30, you will see the Napili Plaza shopping center on your left, which is at the intersection of State Route 30 and Napilihau Street.

Turn left onto Napilihau Street. You will come to a stop sign after a couple of hundred yards. Turn right at the stop sign onto Lower Honoapiilani Road. Then continue for another half-mile until you see Napili Point Resort on your left, which is the ocean side of the roadway.

Napili Point Resort is located at 5295 L. Honoapiilani Road.

Getting around and finding yourself

Driving on Maui is mostly fun and always beautiful The Honoapiilani Highway continues north of Napili, past Kapalua Honoloa, all the way around the top of the island and down to Kahului. Some of the rental car company maps still have the road marked as impassible; it's not. It was paved a few years ago and I've driven it several times. It is, however, extremely narrow and very high up so be warned and drive slowly (not that you have much choice). Gorgeous views and a local village are highlights of the trip.

There are 2 main roads on the southern part of the island: the Hana Highway (from Kahului to Hana), and the road down to Wailea, via Kihei. The former is a famous road, full of one-way bridges, waterfalls, rain and spectacular views. The paved road continues quite a way past the village of Hana although it eventually deteriorates into gravel on the side of a cliff. Somewhere along there is Charles Lindbergh's grave. I haven't found it yet, but others have.

The other road heads south to the resorts of Kihei and Wailea and lots of lovely beaches, including Makena--Big Beach and the clothing-optional Little Beach. The paved road ends at LaPerouse Bay, where you can walk in to great snorkeling.

NEVER LEAVE ANYTHING YOU CARE ABOUT IN YOUR CAR AND NEVER LEAVE IT LOCKED. If there's nothing in the car and it's unlocked, thieves are less inclined to break windows and there won't be anything to steal.
